Service dogs are our partners. They enable us to enjoy more freedom than we'd have without their guidance and loyalty. As such, we should give them as much protection and respect as they deserve, because unfortunately, many people and businesses do not understand the laws, or the relationship shared between service dogs and their companion-owners.
Adults and children often do not understand the etiquette of how to relate to our service dogs when they are working. Petting them, for instance, is a problem. It distracts our dogs as they work, or makes us feel bad when we deny a persons request to do so. For that reason, Hearingimpaired.net has created a "Do Not Pet" patch to tell people your dog is working, and should be ignored and left to do his or her job as your partner. It saves hurt feelings and teaches people more about how they should behave around service dogs in the future.
